Amazon Prime vs Netflix

Almost half of the United States population subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu Plus. Sadly, we don't get Hulu in the UK, so I can't review that (actually, thinking of it I could just use the proxy I use to access my American best friend's Netflix, but...whatever). On a daily basis, 31% of adults watch video on non-TV devices, so I thought making this review would be a good idea!
Price
Firstly, let's talk about the price; the most important factor for cheap-skates like me! Netflix plans start at $7.99 USD a month, or £5.99 GBP. They offer a free month trial, which you can cancel straight away, and never be charged! Amazon Prime costs $8.25 USD a month (or £6.58), students get 50% off and mums get the first 3 months free (US only), you can start a free trial here (or here if you're in the UK). Again, cancel straight away if you want to avoid being charged. In my opinion, both are reasonably priced—3x cheaper than Sky TV (in the UK anyway).

Availability (on devices)
Both Netflix and Amazon are available for PC + Mac, Xbox 360 + Xbox One (although you need an Xbox Live Gold subscription!!), PS3 + PS4, Nintendo Wii + Nintendo Wii U, iPhone, iPod Touch + the iPad family & the Kindle Fire family.
Amazon Prime is available on LG, Sony + Samsung Smart TVs, Sony's Network Media Player + Home Cinema System, and Blu-Ray players from LG, Samsung + Sony. How
ever, sadly, it isn't currently available on Android or Windows Phone.
Netflix is available on Android + Windows Phone, compatible LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung + Sony Blu-Ray players and Smart TVs, Apple TV + set-top boxes from Philips, Roku, WD + Virgin Media, as well as LG home theatre equipment.

Features
Amazon is sort of like premium Amazon shopping, books, music, TV and video streaming all in one. On top of regular TV shows and movies, you get unlimited, ad-free access to over a million songs, over 500,000 books to borrow for free, as frequently as once a month, with no due dates and free unlimited two-day shipping with no minimum order!
You can't get OITNB on Amazon!
Although you don't get all those extra features with Netflix, I find that the quality of streaming is better, and you get Netflix-only content such as the much loved Orange Is The New Black. Also, I find it unacceptable that Prime doesn't support Windows Phone or Android.

User interface
Although the exact selections differ between the two services, the most noticeable disparity is in how Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video present their content. Netflix makes it much easier both to find what you're looking for and to find new content that may not have been on your radar. I find that Netflix has more categories and categorises it's content very precisely.
Amazon Prime Instant Video also offers a ton of categories. Whether you're in the mood for something broad like "Action/Adventure" or "Teen," or something specific like "Mafia" or "Vampire," you can probably find something to suit your tastes.

Verdict
As a video streaming service, Netflix is by no doubt the best, it offers many more shows and movies than Amazon, including original content and has a better user interface. However, in terms of cost, you pay a little more for Amazon Prime and get much more outside of just streaming video, which may be useful, especially for students! I recommend you start a trial for both, and decide which one suits you best.

  1. You don't need Amazon Prime to get videos or TV shows from Amazon. If you have an account with them, meaning, you have ordered something in the past, they just go to Amazon Instant Video and search the video you want. They aren't free but the rental cost is about the same as it used to be at Video Rental Stores. Typically US$1.99 to US$3.99. Amazon also has a much larger selection than Netflix. If you like common movies, the Netflix, but if you like indie film or more unusual movies, the Amazon. For example, I wanted to watch Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark make in 1981. A very popular movie, but not available on Netflix despite its age. Rented it for 48 hours on Amazon for US$2.99. Though I plan to buy the Indiana Jones box set on Amazon as well.
